The Colombian government has organized some activities to reduce unemployment in young professionals like 40,000 new jobs program, which is led by Compensar s.a.s. entity, unfairly for our country and companies it is not enough to have these programs. What are the Colombian companies looking for?. I have been in some selection processes, and I could see three important factors that affect us in our job search and are also essential for a company to hire us.

The first is the lack of work experience. But, why do not young professionals have enough experience? most college students have long academic days, so young people would rather look for part-time jobs which are actually hard to find related to their careers; other students dedicate solely to study and the only work experience they get is when they perform business practices for 6 months or a year if they are lucky, because this is a requirement for graduation in most universities. For many companies this is a big problem because companies require that workers have at least one year of experience in their profession unfortunately companies do not consider business practices because they say it is part of the academic process but not the labor process.

The second factor is that companies have many requirements for hiring new staff and they do not realize that we are recent graduates without professional experience. Companies used to hire unskilled workers to train them and also offer job security, but now companies are seeking professionals with minimum two years of experience and sometimes a year of experience but with a specialization and last but not least require a second language. I think that companies should be strict but they should have different methods for the selection process in young professionals in order to offer job opportunities according to our curriculum to generate mutual benefit, "companies give us work and we offer them new ideas and knowledge".

The third factor is today there is a lot of professional competition. This means many young graduates of different Colombian universities; unfortunately most companies consider the university where professional studied, almost the professional status and in some cases the physical appearance that has the professional. Companies prefer to hire professionals that have some link with them actually, this means there are more opportunities for students with higher socio-economic status and I think this is unfair because a professional is not a university or a status, a professional is knowledge and the ability to function in a workplace.

I think companies and everyone should leave all paradigms to reduce unemployment in Colombia and also to make the selection processes fair. Organizations should be more coherent when they offer job opportunities to young professionals; the organizations should also be fair and qualify professionals according to their knowledge and skills. We “all young professional” need to worry about our working lives and begin it early. Moreover we need to do more to graduate with more education, skills and abilities to find the dream job. I also think we should undertake with new ideas and create new jobs to help our country and especially to the new generations of young professionals
