Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert Netherlands. He was teacher, bookseller and preacher before he became an artist. That decision changed his life and the history of art. Vincent was a distinguished artist for his colorful, beautiful and emotional paintings. He is my favorite artist because he was a person who never gave up until he could do what he loved to do, even when he was alive he couldn’t sell more than one of his paintings. Van Gogh had mental illness that took him to death; he died in France on July 29, 1890 at the age of 37.

Van Gogh didn’t have enough money to pay for a model, so he painted the farmers. After that he practiced colors painting landscapes and flowers and personally those are the paintings that I like the most. He painted himself about 40 times. Actually, he used the self portrait as a way of introspection as a method to make money and develop his abilities as an artist. He said this about self portrait: They say, that it is difficult to know yourself- but it isn’t easy to paint yourself either.

-Vincent Van Gogh in a letter to his brother Théo, September 1889

Vincent was one of the most important post-impressionism artists, but for me, he is one of the most talented artists ever. Tragically he died without knowing how his work was going to be so important for the history of art. He had a particular talent for painting outdoors, for example the famous “Starry Night” (1889), the sky full of clouds with fast circular movements, stars shining with their lights and a moon that grows shining, this effect captures the audience making them feel comfortable. Consequently, he is one of the most famous artist from Netherlands.

Perhaps one of his biggest influences was Paul Gauguin. They met each other in November 1887 Paris. Van Gogh had made an exhibition between artists. When the exhibition finished, Gauguin suggested making an exchange with one of his paintings for two of Van Gogh. On February, 1888, Van Gogh moved to Arles south France to work with more artists and Gauguin. Unfortunately, Van Gogh had a mental break down and they sent him to the clinic Saint-Rémy. However, Van Gogh and Gauguin kept communicating by mail.

Van Gogh’s mental health began to decrease, so he was at the clinic Saint-Rémy. He had epileptic attacks caused by the hurt in his brain which he had been born with. Nevertheless, he made a great work while he was there, he completed 150 paintings. He had a bipolar disorder which could be the cause of his death. People said it is probable he shot himself. His inimitable work is powerful, dramatic, rhythmical, imaginative and emotional. Nobody could ever forget his contribution on post-impressionism history of art specially art lovers.
